A certain ebay dealer often describes a rug as "Hamadan Mosal". What is meant by the term "Mosal"? Thanks.

The word Mosal (or Mussel, Musal) is used in the persian rug Dealers language to describe a rug made in western persia in the destrict of hamadan. It doesn´t directly mean it was made in Hamadan but is Hamadan Typus. Usually Musels are about 200 x 100 cm or about 6-7 ft Long and 3 - 4 ft wide. Usually of low knotcount, bright Colors and low grade wool. When they are newly produced they have a high pile. Typical is a thick warp of Cotton and often blue or Brown wefts, also thick Cotton. Most Musels I know where made in the 1960 - 1980´s due to a large demand in western countries for original persian rugs at affordable Prices.

Thanks for the explanation, KED. I'm attaching photos of the two rugs described as "Hamadan Mosal Sharbaff" that I purchased from this dealer.

As KAD had explained quite clearly the second of your photos is what is usually termed as Mousal. Both pieces are Zanjan and they are quite good. The Shahrbaft bit is a totally different carpet usually woven in the city of Hamedan itself and a much better quality than these. Shahrbaft is sometimes also called Ekbatan.
