Hi,

I am a rug newbie that came across this 8.3ft x 10.7ft rug. The seller claims it is a Nain of high quality and wants $8000 for it. The rug appears in excellent condition. Some pictures are attached.

I would really appreciate help from experts on this forum to identify this rug and let me know if this is a fair price ? Does this appear to be a genuine Nain ? Is it 6La or 9 La ? The knot density appears to be about 840-850 kpsi.

Thank you

Hi Nick,

Thank you for your input. What is the correct method to determine the kpsi ? I measured the number of knots with a ruler (see pic attached), and I counted about 28-29 knots per inch, thus putting the kpsi at around 800. Is this approach flawed ?

Thanks,

Rajesh

I don't think it is Tabbas for one thing Tabas does do blue but not this shade of blue which is very much a Nain Blue. The signature appears to be genuine and it is a very fine piece but it is jufti knots, which just about all weavers in Nain are weaving. It is a very pretty piece and I think for the size if you are buying it from a shop then it is a very good price, as the shop price for a piece like this is much higher.

I measured 25 knots across... that would suggest KPSI of around 600-650.

Sharifi - I did not know that about Nain weaving, why would that be the case?

Little Persia they have been doing that for a long time now. Mofidi was probably the only one that didn't do it, even the new Habibians are doing it. You do find some independent weavers that love their work, who would not do jufti knots. Why they do it? it is purely short sightedness. They think they are saving money but in the long run it is not good for the reputation of Nain Weave, which is known as a very high quality product. The little money they save by doing that does not justify the action. Don't forget it halves their work time and some material.

Sounds like they're trying to falsify the LAA (so they are knotting the same number of knots per square inch as before but for those concentrating on LAA there will be double the number of warps than there otherwise would have been).

well what they do it is not so obvious form the back but what it does is decrease the density of the rug consequently the durability and look in the long term

What is the best and easiest way to spot "jufti" knots for someone new to rug buying?

It is very difficult to tell for an untrained eye. Basically you have to fold the a bit of the rug from the front to open up the pile and then see if the knot is done round one set of warps or two. In other words instead of knotting round two warps they hold together two sets of two of warps and do the knots round them. I have just read it and it confuses me I hope my explanation does not confuse youjavascript:insertsmiley('Think%20','/forum/Images/Emoticons/eusa_think.gif')

Sharafi - thank you for all your insights about these rugs. Very helpful indeed. Could you translate the signature please ? (i have attached the signature image again). Seller claims this is a Habibian..

The signature say "Iran Nain- Jaberi". Was the dealer Iranian, because it is written there why not be honest about it. Anyway each to their own.
