Please can you help me identify what this rug I bought in India (Delhi) actually is. It was sold to me as 80% silk and 20% cotton (ie silk on cotton base) but I suspect it actually is mercerised cotton on cotton, as the price was too much of a bargain for actual silk. Also told that it was from Kashmir, but again not sure if this is true. It appears to be handknotted and the fringe seems to be an extension of the rug base and not sewn on later. Knot density is 144 per inch (ie 12 x 12).

Pictures below of front of rug, back showing fringe, close up of front, close up of back - that is if the site will let me attach them! (if they don't appear can someone please let me know how to attach - also computer novice!).

What does anyone think? Size is 6 x 4 feet. Any idea of value?

Hello and welcome to the Forum.
Your rug is viscose, mercericed Cotton or bamboo silk on Cotton, can´t tell exactly fro pics, but defenetly not natural silk. This stuff sells around 10 USD / squarefoot.

Definitely viscose but handmade at least.

How much did you pay? When you say you were suspicious about it being real silk because of the price then that feeling normally has some foundation.

Hi,

Thanks for the responses. With regards to what I paid I'm slightly embarrassed to say it was about £280 sterling, which is far too much for viscose even if it is handmade. I shall chalk this one up as experience!

What's most annoying is that I'm a seasoned traveller who thought she was wise to such scams...
