Hi All,

I've recently fallen in love with carpets and I wish to continue my education and collection and do not want to be taken advantage of. I'm especially weary of buying Mercerized cotton, rayon and fake silk carpets.I have couple of request:

1. Educational resources on Carpets ( History, Authenticating, etc.)

2. Help me identify these carpets, their worth, and material used in the carperts.

Carpet # 1 - This carpet is from Ghanzi, Afgahnistan, natural dyes, and supposedly all silk. Can you me your evaluation/assessment: worth, materials used, and your opinion:

It is very difficult to tell if a piece is real silk or art silk from a photo. But you can always burn a small strand from it and burn it. If it is art silk then like plastic it will leave a residue a it like burnt plastic, but the natural silk leaves powdery residue.

Your first piece the fringes could be raw silk but the pile seems to be, what they call worsted wool. New in a shop it probably would be about $300 a square meter, much lower resale value

The second one is the design is Turkmen but the piece certainly isnt. It could even be Pakistan rather than Afghan. Very much doubt that is natural dyes. An honest shop value is $200 a meter but unfortunately some people sell them as silk and for maybe even $600 a meter. Much lower resale value.

You certainly do have taste as while this is not the finest one in terms of weaving it is the best one as it is a genuine piece. I believe it is a Kunduz and I dont think it has much age. If it has I dont think it is more than 10 to 20 years. Shop value is about $300 a meter and the resale value is better than the other ones.

The last one I believe is an Indian Silk. Looking at the quality I would say it is most probably art silk and those basis the honest shop value should be around $250 a meter. Personally wouldnt touch it if you are into genuine hand made pieces but good if you are looking for an inexpensive fancy floor covering.

Agreed with the Sharifi and Nick in their assessment. Would say 2nd one is probably Pakistani. And yes I think we'd all say the 3rd one is the nicest in terms of being genuine and a nice quality/design without being particularly fine, valuable etc.

The fringes on the 1st could be raw silk (they don't have the usual sheen of silk but we do have some turkman rugs here with this type of fringe) fringes/foundations but could just as easily be cotton, neither the 1st or 2nd rug has any silk on the pile and are both wool.

The 4th rug could be silk or could be art silk (viscose) but regardless you say you like the 3rd rug the best and you are right to - in future I'd say go for that rather than looking for silk. Until you're more experiences I'd suggest avoiding silk all together, especially if buying abroad as it just leaves yourself open to being ripped off. Wool pieces are more plentiful and generally wear better anyway.

When it comes to collecting rugs, if you're doing it for the enjoyment then go for things you like rather than being sold on the KPSI, type of wool (this can be important but you can be told anything) or "silk".

Do you mind me asking where you got them?
