Hello all, I was hoping someone could help me put an age and possibly a value to my favourite rug, I bought it in a flea market and so have no idea of it's history. It has strong colour and full pile and the warp is finely spun hair (goat?) it also has some old metal rings sewn to the back so I'm guessing that it's spent some time hanging on a wall.

Any hints and tips on how to tell the age of a rug would be gratefully received

Thanks in advance

It is a very pretty piece with a wonderful border. When I looked at the first picture I was sure it was Turkman but looking at the picture of the back I think it is an Afghan. I am more confident about the age, which I think is Circa 1900.

Thanks very much for your reply, circa 1900 was pretty much my estimate and what I was hoping for confirmation of but can I ask why the back makes you think Afghan? As a newbie it screams Turkman (possibly Yomut?) to me and I'd be very interested to learn the difference.

Thanks again

you may be right. It is difficult to explain but the Turkman knotting that I know the knots are more squarish and not as flat. However, I can see why you think it is Yomut but I believe it has more Afghan characteristics. Sorry I cant be more clearer.
