Nick if you are sure its 40/ 50 years old then it must be Caucasian probably Armenian. But the looking at the fringes it doesnt look that old. I am sure somebody that has come across this a lot more will shine more light on it.

You can see a carpet with this design at http://www.bukhara-carpe...an-dragon-rug-D1392.html
Also, I found a picture on the internet of a rug said to be at the Yerevan State Museum that looks like former was copied from. I'm sorry I can't find that link now. I remember it was said to be a 19th century rug. So, since it is a dragon rug, I guess the 19th century rug was also a copy of an older rug. At least it was inspired by, if not a copy of, an older rug. All in all, I have seen three of these designs on the internet not counting yours. One said to be from the 1920's, one sold to me as from the 1940's, and the one from Bukhara Carpets (1960's). All three look like clones of each other, yours looks a little different. My guess is those three were made in Soviet times, and the weavers had to strictly follow the design. Mine (1940's) has a double corded selvedge. Also the way the fringe was finished looks different than yours. I'm a novice, so I shouldn't comment any more about the rugs construction.

Typical soviet production fromcthe 1970's with great quality wool and synthetic colors. Design from 16th century dragon rugs. No great value but excellent quality rug.
