Hello!

I'm new here and I was wondering if anyone with more experience/expertise could shed some light on my silk rug, i.e. place of origin, quality, etc. I bought it from a yearly exhibition sale, from a man from Jerusalem who says he's been coming here for 20 years. My friend also bought one; hers has a signature woven into it. Neither of our rugs came with a certificate.

Size: 49 x 71.5 inches (roughly 4x6 feet)

Condition: Looks pretty good, no obvious signs of wear, except the back of the rug has some minor dirt marks here and there and some of the tassels are "unwound"

KPSI looks around 400-500? It's hard for me to count...

Here is my friend's rug, similar size. We were mostly wondering what the signature says, but similar questions as mine: origin and quality. Her rug seems "fresher" than mine, very clean tassels, and while the knotting is similar to mine or slightly less dense, the pile of silk on the front stands up straighter and is just a wee bit softer. It may have been better-cared for because it was hung up in the seller's booth, whereas mine was laid on a table. (I paid about $400 more for mine, though.) My rug also seems shinier but I think it's because my pile lies down more.

What does her rug's signature say?

Thanks in advance for any help!

Bump! Does anyone have any idea? It can just be about one of our rugs... :)

My friend is especially curious about what her signature says.

I am afraid your photos are not that good, but your rug seems to be silk Hereke from Turkey and if it is that then it is worth about $2000

Again with your friends rug there isnt a clear photo of the back and the fringes. The signature says Qum Babaie but I dont think it is a Qum because the signaure is written backwards and there seems to be something funny about that piece. But if it is the same size as yours and if it is a silk Qum (I have my doubts) then its worth about $1500 in an auction.

Thanks for some of your thoughts, Sharifi & Co!

What are some improvements to the photos you'd like? Or are they simply too low-resolution/color quality? I took the above with my phone but I can take some better pictures with my camera later.

A better picture of a quarter of your rug which inculdes the fringe and the back of your friends rug which includes the fringe might shine more light on their origin and what they are. Also are the fringes in your friends rug silk.

I have provided some more pictures of my rug:

Whole rug:

Looks like damage I didn't notice before:

If my rug is Hereke-style, would it be Chinese-origin Hereke copy?

I cannot take pictures of my friend's rug right now but yes the fringes seem to be silk.

It looks like a Hereke but it is difficult for me to say if it is Chinese or not. It certainly can be but if I could look at it closely it would be easier to tell and that is not possible. Not all Herekes have a signature but what also worries me about this piece is that there is no signature either and there is something funny about it. Anyway even if it is Chinese it is still worth more than $1000. Obviously I dont know how much you paid for it.

My initial reaction to it was Chinese.

Well that's disappointing but thanks for your time and help.

I paid $2100 CDN for mine and my friend paid $1600 for hers.

Why is that disappointing. Dont forget that price is an auction price. If you bought these pieces in auction then yes a bit disappointing but from a shop or a dealer you pay at the very minimum the price you paid and I would have thought a lot more than that.

Agree with Little Persia,
Chinese silk, probably 230 line Quality, most likely Silk + Artsilk mix.
