Hello,

I have had an Afghan Rug for a few years now but have recently considered getting some cleaning and restorative work done on it.

I thought posting it here might give me some idea if it is worth spending a few hundred dollars repairing.

This was presented to me by a co-worker while I was in Afghanistan in 2006. It was described to me as being hand made and fairly rare in that it had creatures and people on it which was frowned upon by the Taliban. Its approx 7'-9" x 5'.

Anyway, please have a look at the pics and let me know if this is worth the time, effort and $$ to restore.

Thanks

Scotty

Heres another photo with a measuring tape over the detail:

I wish I could find out who the characters are supposed to be :)

It is certainly an unusual piece for an Afghan. It is also a very fine piece. I think you probably would have to pay something like $1500 to $2000 in a shop if you wanted to buy it. So you decide.

Thanks for the reply and info.

I've been scouring all sorts of resources, but haven't found anything quite like it, which is concerning when trying to figure out what to do with it.

I really wish I had paid more attention to information on its background when it was presented to me.

Thanks again.

I have a feeling it was woven in Harat where they have strong ties of Iran and while Afghans do study and appreciate Persian Poems but the style of design is more Persian with portraits of Persian Poets Hafez and Saadi

Ah ha...

Ok, I see now. A Google search of those Poets now make the portraits and theme on the rug much more clear.

I recall Wali (my Cultural Advisor) mentioning that both of the men in the smaller portraits were popular in their culture. in retrospect I think he had mentioned that this rug was for a child's room.

Does the portrayal on the rug detract/add to its value, and is it possible to date how old it is?

Thank you again for your help.

The characters just make it more interesting and unusual. I think its about 10-15 years old from the photos
