Hello, I'm brand new to this forum.

I have been looking for a nice, old Heriz or Serapi for quite a while now and a carpet dealer who knows I'm looking sent me photos of yet another candidate, labeling it a "nice old Heriz". Well, I've just never seen anything like it. The red is a cool red, versus warm, the corner brackets are almost teal blue, and there's a feather in each of the corners that I have never seen anywhere before. When I queried the dealer about the colors and feather, his reply was, "It's a Tabriz Heriz about 70 years old. In the old days they made them in the villages (assume he meant Heriz) and later they moved to the city" (assume he meant Tabriz). So he's implying it was made in the 1940's in Tabriz but in the Heriz style? Dyes look synthetic but it is handknotted. It looks newer to me than 1940's, but I am a real neophyte. My gut is this is just a very nicely done, newer rug made ..?? anybody's guess.

Does anybody know anything about this rug? I actually LIKE it, bold as it is... I'll try to get more images - of the back, etc. but in the meantime would appreciate any feedback you can give. Particularly price, since this carpet dealer is a real old-fashioned carpet dealer. He expects loads of bargaining. Thanks! (how does one post photos?)

Welcome to the Forum -and yes, your guess is right. It is a Tabriz made rug with Heriz design. I really doubt the Age of 1940 - Colors are synthetic and to me the rug Looks more like 1960-70.

Ah, thank you. Am at least a little heartened to know my gut instincts were correct. Now I just need a value since I've never bothered looking at newer (1960's) rugs. Am not too keen on synthetic dyes... I sure like the softer, natural pigments that are so warm. The carpet is 373 x 285, so large. KHAD

KAD,or one of the experts out there. Can anybody give me a price range of value for this rug? I've gone to online rug estimating guides and come up with wildly varying amounts. Thanks!

Agree with KAD but I think it is even newer than that but one can tell better from the back and fringes. What the dealer told you about Heriz is a bit incorrect you might like to look at this link

Thank you, Sharafi & Co.

Well, I have looked at your link and besides that have done much research. However, I cannot find any carpet online that even remotely resembles this one, color-wise. Ones with similar patterns, yes - but these colors, no - despite all the different search parameters I've tried.

Re: the fringes, they looked newer to me too as they are quite long and not frayed. The odd thing is, I don't think this dealer would deliberately lie to me but you'd think an Iranian who has been in the business for so long would know better. I will just have to tell him "no thank you".

Any idea on price, though?

Thanks again

Well I think it is a post revolution production, and a good one, that is why you dont see many of them online. If it is not a second hand one then I think the price should be around £400 to £500 a meter

There was a by the way that I forgot to add and that is you must remember NOBODY knows everything in this business so dont be too hard on your dealer, as long as he is not pulling the wool over your eyes

Interesting, all of it, and the value is much higher than I expected. This is why I am so fascinated by carpets and the stories they have to tell. There is so much to learn.

Thank you.

But keep in mind that the auction or resale price for it is much lower, in case that is what you have in mind.
