Hello, can any body help me put a value on this rug, two different people have valued it, one at a Kashan silk rug, circa 1890 £3000 to £5000 and one put it at a late 19th century silk Fereghan rug £6000 £8000

Condition is going to be very important in valuing this piece and you have not said anything about that and it is not clear from your photos what the condition is like. Also there are no photos of the back to see the weave. It is a very nice piece and looks around the 1900 mark.

Thank you, it appears to be in great condition! i have included some more pictures and a close up of the back. I was given this rug, by my Grandmother 15 years ago. she had an extensive rug collection, When she passed on my father sold most of them and including the large one's, they were all sold at Christies auction's roughly 10 years ago. I have had Bonhams value it between £3000 to £5000 and Christies have valued it at £5000 to £8000. but the next auctions are December and april next year, I would like to sell the rug for funds towards my 1st house purchase.

the place to sell this is definitely Christies and if you have had William Robinson value it then he is the foremost expert in this field. It is very unlikely that you would get a higher price at Bonhams for this piece. I think it is a Farahan. It wouldnt surprise me if you got the £8000 in an auction for it but that you have to be lucky with and have the two people that want it. It is likely as it appears to be in very good condition and for a piece of this age that is very important. I doubt that a dealer will pay you that price. However, if you know anybody privately that would be interested in a piece like this then they would be getting an absolute bargain at £8000.

Well apart from dealers that you can find online and approach by sending the images then there is the auctions, which you dont want to go through. The next best thing is to take clear photos and post them on rugrabbit.com and may have some luck there. But it is mainly dealers there and I don't know how much luck you will have there.

To be honest, I don't expect to get that, I would just like someone to get proper use of it! lol And like i say, i want to buy my 1st house :-) so what ever i can get for it really??

Could any body explain a new bee like me what makes one think this rug was made in Farahan? I looked at the pictures and the only thing that seems to be logic is Kashan (design, Shirazi, Kilim border, Colors, except knot structure that dosn´t look like Kashan or Farahan to me).

Well KAD you obviously are not a new bee in fact quite to the contrary. You are right looking at it you first think it is a Kashan but the weave is not a city weave. Then you have to see what pure silk pieces were around at that time which is probably about 1880. As Little Persian says we have not seen or touched the piece. I dont think it is Turkish because I dont think they did medallion pieces of this kind in that era. I am almost sure it is not Kashmir nor Russian but Farahan did do silk that were not extremely fine and the knot had a villagey look about it. The other rug of that era is Heriz area and I dont think it is Heriz either.
