It is very difficult to tell without an image of the back and fringes. It certainly appears to be a reproduction and at a guess I would say an Indian one. It also appears to be a relatively good quality piece. What were you told when you bought it?

Thank you Sharafi & Co for your prompt respnse. It is most helpful as I am eager to know more about this rug rather than act ignorant! I would like to know where this rug comes from and whether this is hand knotted - all relevant details about this rug. Thank you.

He said it was Hamadi rug - anyway, here are the photos of the back and the sides if it helps to shed light on this rug. Thank you very much.

I have never heard of a Hamadi production. That doesnt mean that it doesnt exist. However, there were no photos posted, I think you forgot to upload them

Ok let me start by giving you the provisos first. Firstly it is not easy to tell the origin of all carpets from photos and secondly this is more difficult with new pieces as there is a lot of copying of designs from other weaving areas. Having said that I am almost sure that this is a Persian Najafabad (central Iran) with the Bakhtiari design influence. The goods from both areas are sold in the Isfehan Bazar. It is quite a fine piece and from the photos it appears as if they have used very nice soft wool and rich dyes of good quality.

I hope this does help

Thank you my friend at Sharafi & Co...you are AMAZING! Your knowledge & experience is clearly MORE THAN EXCELLENT! After reading your response I did a google search on Bakhtiari and found one close to my rug so I am now convinced my rug must be from there. The gentleman who owns the store is from Iran so I believe he must have imported this from somewhere in Iran but wasn't telling me exactly where from and his responses didn't quite match - don't know what his reason could be! I am deeply THANKFUL TO YOU for solving this mystery for me. THANK YOU VERY VERY VERY MUCH! THANK YOU.

Thank you for your kind words. But be careful I did not say it is from Bakhtiar, as clearly the weave is not a Bakhtiari weave. The DESIGN has Bakhtiari INFLUENCE but I am almost sure it is from Najafabad. Either way it is a nice piece. Enjoy it.

Yes I understand...now armed with this knowledge I shall politely ask the seller to explain where this originates from? I cannot thank you enough for your help...are you in London?
