Greetings,

Brand new here, and new to antique rugs. I recently purchased this rug advertised as a Persian rug. Can anyone verify that it is Persian and possibly give me a little history on it? It is about 10X12.

Thanks in advance.

A few other details, I bought this rug on e-bay listed in mint condition which it is not, but I do like the rug. It was listed as 200 KPSI and as an antique Bokhara Persian rug from about 1960. Just wanted to see if this matches up with people who are more knowledgeable than my self.

Are "Bokhara" rugs made in Persia/Iran?

I purchased this rug because I desperately needed something to put in a rather bare depressing apartment, and thought that the intricacies in this rug were awesome.

Now that'd I have had a chance to look at the rug a while, I see some issues like color-run, some minor repairs, and areas that may need professional attention later. Most urgently I am waiting for a mothball-like smell to dissipate.

The rug also is not laying completely flat but I attribute this to it being folded for some time.

On the positive notes, the rug is very nice overall and seems to have great integrity...the design is beautiful, and the knotting appears to be done with great skill (from a novices perspective.)

Thoughts and opinions are very much appreciated.

Hello and welcome to the Forum.

The rug you bought is from Pakistan. In US there is a problem that the Terms of persian rug (rugs that originate and are made in Persia = Iran) and oriental rug (rugs that have designs like persian rugs but are made in countries other than Iran) are mixed up.

Original Bokhara rugs are made by tribal poeple from the area east of the caspian sea. They are named after the tribes that made the rugs such as Yomud, Tekke, Esari and so on. The main trading city where the nomadic tribes sold their rugs was the City of Bukhara in todays Uzbekistan.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bukhara

In the late 19th and early 20th century there was no scientific Information where these rugs where made so they where named after their known trading area Bukhara.

Since the design became very popular rugs where made in Iran, Afghanistan and Pakistan with the same design. Your rug has a desgn that is no longer traditional Turkman, it was developed in a finer stlye in Pakistan. Most of these rugs are made in Karachi. The Quality is not bad, but the value is not very high since these rugs are not knotted like traditional rugs and are made in large numbers. Since it was a used rug there are always possible problems like color run, stains, pets urin, moth and bugs. If you have a reliable rug shop in your area maybe it would be a good idea to have the rug washed and newly protected against moth damage.

I would have said this is a Persian Turkman rather than Pakistani.

Thanks guys! Yes, it is a bit confusing here in the US, between the use of Persian and Oriental.

The rug actually seems quite clean, it's just the mothball smell I don't like. I plan on keeping it as-is for two years and then having it sent out to be washed, and to have any "critical" repairs done and finally some cosmetic repairs.

Also, I'd like to have the rug "squared-up" it's not very rectilinear anymore.

I will add a few more pictures here with so some of the color run and also the knots and pattern.

I certainly agree with Little Persia and its not that bad a piece. But I certainly would not attempt to wash it myself as I am sure the blue colour will run, so best to give it to an expert. It does have some value as well.

Thank you. I do intend to only have it washed professionally...and any other attention it may need. The seller has claimed that as Little Persia indicated, that it is a Persian Turkomen would you agree with that assessment?

Do you know if this rug can be squared up?

Kind regards

As I said in my earlier post, I certainly do agree with Little Persia. I cannot quite see the extend of the problem from your photos, but from what I could see it can be sorted. Just about any irregularity like that can be corrected, as long as it is not too extreme. It will need patience and somebody that knows what they are doing. By the way with rugs it is always good to take care of the problem as soon as you can, otherwise it may become more complicate and consequently a lot more expensive.
