Hi. I'm trying to find out some info on this arabain looking rug I purchased at an estate sale last year. It's double sided. Same scene on the other side, just reversed. My pics aren't the best, but I took a close up to show the threads. Can anyone please help me indentify this..? I've been wondering for some time now. Thanks

Your rug is a Dhurrie from India. It is woven (Kilim). Nice rug.

Hi. Thank you for the reply. Would you happen to be able to put an age on something like this? Also, is it common to put all these figures on the rug? Would there be some kind of symbolic point they were making? I'm sorry for all the questions. I just love to learn about all art forms, and I really saw this rug as a fine example of that.

Would you happen to be able to put an age on something like this?

-> Made within the last 20 years.

Is it common to put all these figures on the rug?

-> No, rather unusual, but typical designs for India (Maharadja on horse, peacocks, elephant for riding). Hunting scene similar to old mughal / Mogul minuature paintings from Agra or old persian minuature paintings from Isfahan.

Would there be some kind of symbolic point they were making?

-> No, I would say it comes from a commercial production, decorative aspects were the main reason for the design.

Hi. Could you please give me an idea of a value for a rug like this? Possibly what you would sell a rug like this for, if I were to buy it from you. Also, is there a way to tell the date of the rug by looking at it? Would it be because it still retains so much color, compared to an old rug that would be faded or worn badly? Have you ever come across a rug like this, with all these animals on it? Also the rug is 6' x 9'. Thank you very much for all your help.

Hi. I've taken the rug to a studio to get true accurate color schemes, as well as a clearer picture of the scene. Can anyone give me an idea of a value of a rug as unique as this one? There's literally nothing out there anywhere in the world to compare to this. I would really like to know. Anyone??

I've been hitting a brick wall for a year or longer. If no one knows, can they direct me somewhere. I've done everything short of flying to India. Should I insert a Nike shoe ad..:)

Your rug is a bit unusual in design, but it is not antique and it is not of great value. Things like this sell at $400 - $500.

Hmm.... I sent the pictures to Shyam Ahuja a couple weeks ago. They're the ones who gave all the info on the rug, and how it was crafted. The designer and buyer got together, then called me back and told me that it would cost at least $2,500 to make a rug like that today, and they would add a thousand or two over it on the retail market. They said it wasn't extremely old, but probably from the 70's, and because of the age, I could add a higher value than the total they came up with, but not sure how much. They also said that in 40 or 50 years the rug would be a museum piece because of the extremely unusual design, and would be worth many many times what it is today. I'm not sure but I think it's worth a lot more than $400. I know. Why did I even ask then? Because I was hoping to get a response from someone who actually knew the style, and could tell me with certainty. Not just guess. Thanks anyway for the reply though.

Well, I don`t know who Shyam Ahuja is, but what he told you will make anyone in the industry laugh out loud. We can produce identical rugs as many as you want in India where this rug was made wilth same wool and Cotton and sell them to you for US$ 650 NEW! Yours is used and it is not an antique, so a Price of $ 400 is on the upper end for a rug like this! Not even in 50 years there will be a great rise in value.
I suggest you buy rugs like this from me and sell them to Mr Shyam Ahuja - if he was not lying to you about the Price of $ 2,500 to make a rug like this you can make a great Profit selling them to him for $ 1,500.

Shyam Ahuja: They've been in business since 1969. They have offices in New York, Paris, Australia, Brussles, Mumbai, Delhi, and Bangalore, with visitors from all around the world. They have designed for many well known people including Ralph Lauren, and the Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandh, and his wife. He basically revived the dying art of dhurrie making. They're pretty well known. Why did you take so long to tell me if you knew three weeks ago? I asked you the value after your first reply, and you never responded to numerous attempts on my end. I even emailed you through your site several times with no response. I think you only responded now because I wouldn't let the subject die, and you just guessed because you don't know for sure. I do appreciate the reply, but I personally don't agree with the price. I can recreate an Andy Warhol, doesn't mean it's the real thing.

- I am doing this here in my free time to share my knowlege (Go to an appraizer and have rugs evaluated, then you know what you are getting here for free!). So I am responing when ever I have time for this.

- I am not guessing about your Dhurrie. If I am not sure about a rug I always tell so.

- You are right about an Andy Warhol - this is right for any other piece of art. There are antique rugs that sell for more than 30.000.000 USD - these are also not reproducable to sell for the same value.

Lifting an (maybe 30 year old) used Dhurrie into the level of recogniced art is a bit too much in my eyes.

Why don´t you take it to an recogized auchtion house to have its value checked? You may think of the value of this rug what ever you like. Poeple working in this market might see things different.

I recommend Sothebys or Christies, they have specialiced rug departments.
