Hello All:

I need some opinions on rug values. I am looking to purchase a few rugs here in Afghanistan before I leave country. I am going to be buying Persians. As far as I can tell, the ones I have looked at are handmade, silk and over 500KSPI at the minimum.

I only have a front and back of the rugs because I just found this site and didn't know the 4 photo requirements. I cannot travel to the various rug merchants easily, would appreciate any help on value's before I purchase.

The first two Persians are 5'x8'
3rd is Kashmere 6'x9'
4th is Persian about 2'x3'

Thank you,

Hello,
I am not expert enough to tell you the value of these rugs. Personally, I would only buy them in Afghanistan if I had a solid expert opinion as to their worth. A couple of concerns right off the bat: 1)if they're Persian, is it legal to bring them in to the USA? There are sanctions in place against Iran. 2) the graphic design of the 3rd rug is Bakhtiari, but you are calling it Kashmir, so I assume the dealer is calling it that. If it's Bakhtiari (or Persian of any kind) why is he calling it Kashmir? If it's Kashmir, then it's not Persian. 3) why buy Persian rugs in Afghanistan? There are lots of Persian rugs in the US and Europe, and there's no reason to expect a better price in Afghanistan.

So, in conclusion, if you love these rugs and end up buying them, I wish you all good luck and enjoy them! If I were in your position, I would be extremely wary.

Thanks for the info. I do plan on being very selective if I choose to buy rugs here. Does anyone know how good the Chinese "fake" Persians are, is there a way to distinguish? The rugs I have seen appear to be of very good quality, do fakes usually run in the 700KPSI range? Thanks.

The Chinese copies can be quite good but they're not worth the same money.

From the first two images it appears the second image is 400kpsi and the first double that. Not too keen on the small rug. Kashmiri isn't Persian but it actually looks like quite a good rug as Kashmir silk goes.

What type of prices are they looking for?

As TMC mentioned if you're importing back to the US you might run into problems. I don't know how easy it would be to claim they were Afghan rugs or Chinese rugs.

I ended up getting 5 x rugs (none of them pictured in my first post above), all varying in sizes. The largest being 4'2" x 3'2" from 400KPSI to almost 600KPSI.

Attached is an oval one I got. 3'x 2' About 530 KPSI.

I have my ways of getting them back is all I can say. I went with more rugs of a smaller size for ease of packing and ability to put on a wall or sell as needed.

I don't have great pics of all the ones I bought because they are out of my hands now. The 5'X8' (about 600-700KPSI) rug in my first post I probably could have gotten for around $4000-4200 US.
