Hello,
A true neophyte here! However, I have been studying plenty over the past couple of months and want to say thanks to you all who participate on this forum. I've spent a bit of time on here, but certainly havent had anything to add to the knowledge bank--:-)

I'm planning to buy a couple of rugs and would be keen to get some thoughts.

Here's what I've been told about the rugs which I'm considering purchasing through a nice Pakistani fellow I know in HK. All the sizes are listed on the photos.

The first one is what I've been told is a Sarook (I'm sure there are a number of ways to spell this haha):
-Approximately 30 years old
-He works with a big carpet company in Lahore and was thinking to dye the black. After further consideration he has suggested not to do this to this rug as he feels it's a bit special.
- It has been suggest that this carpet be used in a low traffic area.
-Plan would be to place it on carpet in our bedroom at the end of the bed.
-Weight is about 15kg's

The second one is a new Hatchlu:
- It is supposedly made with belgian wool
-It will be used in a rumpus room with medium traffic at times
-The carpet will be on padding with concrete underneath
-Carpet may be ironed prior to shipping
-Fringe will be straightened and cut to 1.5"
-Weight is about 30kg's

The third one is from Andkhoy allegedly:
-don't really know much about it, just that it's "unusual"
-fringe will be straigtened and cut to 1.5"
-plan is to put this in a high traffic area in our living room (high traffic= two people and dog-ha)

Total cost, inclusive of international shipping is right around $3k. I'd be keen to know anything you can tell me about these and if I'm overpaying.

Understanding these carpets I'm asking to be looked at are in no way "antique", I would still like any input anyone can offer. Don't feel like you're going to hurt my feelings-- :-)

Thanks in advance for any information you can offer.

Three different grades of rugs. I'd rank the Sarouk/Sarook/Sarough (ha!) first then the Andkhoy finally the Hatchluu.

The Sarough is a really nice rug, not sure of its condition though. Your man saying he was considering dying the black areas would suggest low pile or foundation showing. If in decent condition it's a good rug.

The Andkhoy rug will likely have quite fine and nice knotting and will feel quality but be warned that these "Beljik" rugs can often have issues with dyes running.

The Hatchluu is a modern Kargahi implementation.

Depending on the rugs sizes it's an ok deal taken shipping into consideration (unless you get hit with customs charges!). He'll make money and you'll save a bit compared to retail. It really depends on that Sarough, its the type of rug that if in good condition would be thousands on its own at retail.

The rugs are Pakistani/Afghan in origin so there shouldn't be an issue with the embargo.

Little-Persia,
Thank you kindly for having taken the time to look at the carpets/rugs. I'll try to post some more detailed pictures of the Sarook/Sarouk/Sarough (hehe) when I get the carpets. I don't really know the pile condition, was just told that to paint it would most likely diminish the value.

I've trolled through heaps of pictures Sarooks and haven't really seen anything like this. Do you have any reference for this gul type design on the Sarooks? Most seem to have more floral designs and somewhat less pattern like the one I'm getting.

I had heard the Andkhoy rugs typically have nice, fine knotting and hopefully this is what I will get.

Will the dyes typically already have run on the Beljik or would it typically not occur until it gets wet/washed?

Thanks again mate!--neo

Partly the reason for the various spellings! Sarouk rugs are normally Persian and are fine, floral patterns. This is an Afghan Sarouk (they may be called something else but we have one which was sold to us as a Sarough) and I've seen a few elsewhere named Sarough. I'm no expert in these rugs, they look Turkmen in origin to me but ours is called Sarough and so is yours so there must be something in it. They're very short, tightly knotted pile; it handles almost like leather. Good rugs.

Here is a link to one we are selling: http://www.little-persia...ug&cnt=0&id=758

Another poor quality version I found on Google: http://www.your-carpet.c...hanistan_293_x_193.html

As for the Andkhoy - it may not be a problem, just depends. If it's older then I don't see there being an issue if there hasn't been already but if washing it there's always a risk of colour rug and for these rugs I'd say the risk would be high (unless it has been washed several times in the past).

Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Very kind of you to provide this information to me. I really like the one you guys are selling. The borders are absolutely stunning.................It's a big carpet too!

Thanks also for explaining the persian Sarook vs the Turkmen Sarouq. This certainly explains why I was able to find few of the more geometric carpets online. Changing the spelling certainly helped to find pictures/information online.

Cheers,
Neo
