Please help me identify my rug :)

Hi! Could anybody please identify my wool rug for me? I just bought it from a charity shop. I'm not sure if it's Morrocan or Afghan or what - I'm not very savvy when it comes to rugs. I just fell in love with its' beautiful colours and lovely weaving. There's no label on it anywhere and the lady at the shop couldn't shed any light. It measures 200cms length x 160cms width not including the tassels. The pile is short and very soft and the pattern is also on the reverse in very bold colours. Down the length sides run flatweave in alternating red and green bars and on the widths between the tassels and the piled rug are green/red patterned flatweave. The only damage I can see is one of the green flat bars on the side is frayed - the rest of the rug looks immaculate barring age/wear to some of the tassels. The chances are I've just spent a small fortune on a machine-made cheap rug but at least the money went to a very humanitarian cause :)

Being as I'm new here and don't use forums much I don't know how to add my images. Could anybody help me in this regard? I'd really appreciate if somebody could take 2 minutes for me. Many thanks in advance.

Hi again! Yay I managed to upload my images somewhat. The first 2 images are of the top 'piled' side of the rug. The 3rd and 4th images are of the underside which look strikingly like the top. The other images show the l'il bit of damage to one border and the weave/tassels etc. Hope these help. Thankyou :)

Sorry my mistake - the width is 140cms not 160cms. Oooops hehe! :)

Hi and welcome to the forum.
Your rug is a replication of an antique Dagestan / Kazak rug. It was made most likely in Pakistan or possibly in India. Nice quality and attractive prayer design.

A replication of an antique Kazak? Wooooow! That might sound paltry to some but I'm really thankful - it's cool that I know where it originates from design-wise and craft-wise. Well it cost me £125 so I'm guessing that if it's a replica then I didn't pay too far overn the odds. The camera didn't capture the colours very well - they're actually a lot bolder in person. from these pictures it appears to be a pretty and finely woven turkish rug with a caucasian kazak design...the red dye implies it is not antique but it certainly appears to be about 60 years old. tough to be accurate when not in person but this is what i would presume simply based on the pictures. my appraised value would be approx $750

Fantastic! So the general consensus is that it's Kazak then. Coooool I have a Turkish rug! From Pakistan to Persia to Turkey - that was one heckuva journey haha! Many thanks for sharing your knowledge, Bob. Much appreciated.

Cannot agree with that at all. Looks like a lower quality Kazak design implemented in India. Guessing on age but would say no more than 20 years.

Selling these new, at around £375-445.

You are right in the sense the consensus is it is a Kazak "design". Not Kazak.

Hi and thanks for the post Little-Persia! Although a bit out on the age (forgiveable as he only had images to go on), I think Bob was pretty much spot-on with his value appraisal and the rugs' origin. I just found this on ebay and it's 95% identical to mine - item no. 350765731749
Unless, of course, the above rug on ebay is being mis-sold as Turkish with a pre-sale RRP of over $1500...

It's my first ever Kazak(design)/Caucasian(design) rug and I'm very happy with it. Us poor folk can't afford to gamble £10,000+ on what some sellers have us believe to be true handwoven/antique/rare rugs. To the uninitiated - if it looks good then it looks good and the cheaper the better if it's for your own use :))

Photographs in my opinion are not clear enough to determine the true colors. My vote is turkish melas 1960's revival of a rare antique Kazak double niche design.
