Hello there! I'm so glad to have found you folks, as we would like to know more about a rug we just bought.

My fiance and I picked this rug up at a local estate sale for $25. (Considering that our hamburger lunch cost $32, we thought that was a deal.) The seller knew nothing about it.

It measures 3'1" x 5'4". I've done a burn test on a very small fiber, and it seems (smells, that is) like a natural fiber. I didn't have enough of a sample to feel very confident about that, though.

The rug is very rough to the touch. It feels like brushing a horse against the grain. I did a spot cleaning with lukewarm water and vinegar, though, and that small section feels much softer. It also looks much more vibrant. So, the rug is probably filthy.

The fringe is almost entirely gone. And it's sewed onto the rug with fishing line. This suggests it's a machine-made modern rug. But based on the info on this site, I think the back and the design suggest hand-made. I'm thinking (hoping) perhaps the fringe and binding were later repairs.

Would anyone here be able to tell us more about this adorable little beast? Even if it's a 1980s olefin POC, we love it. But of course we're hoping it's something a bit more special.

Hello and welcome to the forum.
The rug you bought is a handknotted wool rug. It was made in Pakistan within the last 20 years. Foundation is made of cotton. These rugs are often called Bukhara since the design is a style that was copied from the turkmen desing rugs (Bukhara is the major trading city of the nomads in that area).
Value is not much more than what you paid since condition is strongly used and fringes gone as you have seen yourself.
Still the rug will last for many years to come. From the hygenic side I would have the rug washed by a professionell washer (will probably cost as mucuch as what you paid for it - from the pictures I can tell it is very dirty!) but then it will look much better, shine like silk and you will enjoy it for many years to come.

Thank you so much for this info. As soon as I Googled "bokhara Pakistan" I saw hundreds of rugs that look very much like mine. Woo hoo! It's fun to know where this lovely rug came from.

Do you have any guesses, though, why they would have cut the rug and then bound it and added fringe? My fiance has a handmade rug he bought in Turkey in the 1990s. It was brand new when he bought it, and it ends with a flat weave on all sides, and fringe on the ends made directly from the warp. The side-binding on this rug is very irregular and somewhat unattractive. And the added fringe is entirely unattractive! It seems like an odd way to finish off what seems like a otherwise nice rug.

pakistan bokhara...hand made but very mass produced type...from approx 1980...appraised value $250. My guess is since it was sewn on fringe, it was done after the rug was made in an attempt to reinforce the edges.
