Hello

Recently purchased this rug at an estate sale in Maryland. I believe is is handmade. Now, whether or not it is Native American is the question. I purchased it for $50. I'd like to know more about it (is it real?/fake?), where is it from, what's it worth etc.

Thanks in advance,

J

I believe this is not a Navajo rug. It's a kilim (slit weave) and has fringe. As I understand it, Navajo rugs are almost all woven without fringe, and they don't use the slit weave kilim technique. It's a nice looking little flatweave rug though; not bad for $50! I don't know where it was made - there are a lot of Pakistani and Afghan rugs made with vaguely "southwestern" features, and many of them are sold in Santa Fe and other US cities.

Interesting! I thought it was definitely from North America. Thank you for the information. I'm going to look more into it.

it appears to be a pretty turkish flatwoven kilim....maybe 1960s....appraised value $150 handmade but not american indian...navahoes are heavier and differebt color scheme and texture very blankety but heavy and dense....this seems very lightweight which is common to turkish kilims from the 60s....
