5000 kpsi Hereke silk carpet

Hi there,

My family owns a couple of original Hereke silk carpets woven in mid 1990s. The carpets are silk on silk, perfectly preserved and hand-knotted originally in Hereke. The one in the pictures has an amazing density of 784 knots per square cm(28x28), which means over 5000 kpsi, and the dimension of if is 97 cm X 60cm (HXW).

What do you guys think will be the best way to sell these finely woven rugs at af fair price in the market?

Hello, I don't know what these rugs are worth, but just a note on knot counting: these are Turkish knots, and one knot crosses two warps. Therefore in the horizontal direction, two "bumps" count as one knot. Good luck with these rugs!

Thanks a lot. I'll look into that. My mother and father-in-law have been in silk carpet business for nearly 40 years. I'm pretty sure that they wouldn't miss such a point.

I've sent the pictures to Christie's and Sotheby's for valuation. It was of course rejected for being too young for the client base, but the reactions I got from the rug experts was positive. One of them said:

"It is phenomenally fine and a very attractive rug.."

The other:

"Your carpets appear to be very finely woven.."

I've sent the pictures to an online auction company. We'll see what happens.

Counting the knots (on a very fuzzy image) I approximate it to be something along the lines of 40-45 knots across an inch so probably 1600-1700kpsi - still extremely high knot count but do not think it's 5000 or near it.

Would have thought Sotherby's or Christie's would have taken it, it's a nice and valuable rug. I know they prefer older pieces but I've seen younger rugs as wel. Try Bonhams.

Otherwise contact dealers and see if they have any buyers in mind (if they don't then it's the type of rug that might sit about a store for years before finding someone to buy it due to the price they'd be charging).

Thanks a lot. I will try Bonhams.

An expert from Christie's advised me to try a dealer caller Essie Carpets, located in the UK.

Actually this rug and the other ones, as valuable as this one, waited in the stores of Sultanahmet for years; but most probably for its high price, couldn't be sold. I am trying new methods rather than traditional ones, such as auction houses or big dealers. We'll see what happens.

Hi guys,

I was waiting for an answer from an online auction platform about the valuation of this rug. They came back with the value of 8.000 Euros. This is way less than we were expecting, of course.If it goes into an auction, the price might increase, but who knows?

What do you think? Is this a fair price for this carpet?
