Hello,

I apologize in advance for the incomplete pics (long story), but I think they are good enough to start with. This over-all rug graces a big living room. It was purchased by my grandmother who was born in the 1880s. She probably bought it at auction like she bought most everything else. To my untrained eye, the rug looks like one of the Persian "City" types, i.e., Sultanabad, Ferahan Sarouk, Tabriz, etc., but after looking at hundreds of photos on the web, I can't find any patterns that correspond.

Rug is blue with red main border.

I would appreciate any ID or other information, and eventually, I will have better photos and dimensional data for a more detailed assessment. Thanks.

Here is the central part of the field:

This is a corner of the border:

Just adding a bit more to hopefully elicit some thoughts... Keeping in mind that I'm a rank novice, these are some of the things that are puzzling me about this carpet:

- The sparse design and lack of clutter. Most rugs I have seen have more "design density". The arabesque design seems to leap out because it has so little competition.

- The daisy "wreaths" around the ogive/palmette objects don't appear in many rugs that I have seen.

- Blue fields seem less common than red ones.

- I can't find any good style matches to the ogive/palmette objects. I've found roughly similar designs but not enough to make me cry "Eureka"

Any hints at all on which direction I should be looking in would really help. Just knowing the broad "type" of carpet would really help a lot.

Thanks for any and all comments.
