I was wanting some help to see if this rug is worth paying for an appraisal. A local person here is Asheville will do it for $130 dollars. I hope I did enough to take decent pictures, this rug is so big. They said it was a Turkish rug, it was a silent auction and the highest bid was $750. So I bid $25 more and got the rug. I am a newbie in this rug world, any help would be appreciated. Is it handmade or machine made? Is it Turkish? Does anyone know what the writing means? OK, here we go:

Nice rug, I would say from India or more likely from Pakistan. New price would be 2500 - 3000 USD.

Wow, thanks, the charity was for Habitat for Humanity here in the US. Would the arabic writing on the back lean more toward Pakistan?

Nice write up on that rug, could you take a look at this rug,

I won the rug at a silent auction, I already had one reply but still baffled as to where it is from.

Thanks,
Joe

Thanks Joe,

Without the piece in my hand i would say at a glance its of Indian origin. I imagine its quite a thick pile and slightly rigid on the hadel.

They are not used by the indian culture, but exported to Europe to be used as utility rugs in the home.
Great durable pieces and last for many years.

I'd say you did well at the auction.

thanks for the feedback, yes, it is quite thick, I love the rug, the lady says it matches the drapes, the cats like it, I am going to get it professionally appraised for insurance purposes, are you in the states and could you recommend anyone in North Carolina that could do an apprasil.

Thanks Joe,

I am not in the US I'm afraid and wouldn't know anyone in your area either. When choosing your appraiser make sure they are an established dealer, check out the competition on the internet and expect to pay between $75 - $150 for a quality appraisal.

Note: Try and turn the rug once a year to even the wear and maintain it by vacuuming when required. I recommend professional cleaning of these pieces every 2-4 years.

Kind Regards,

OrientalYarns

Thanks for the tips,
Kind Regards,

Stephen Saunders

I forgot to ask, is this rug hand woven? Or machine made?

Thanks,
Joseph

Handwoven, just like all the great Oriental Carpets of the East.
