I recently bought two 3' X 5' (approx.)Turkish rugs in Kusadasi. The store owner told me that they were 125 years old and had been made by the same person and had no wear because they were part of a dowry. He said that the rugs couldn't be taken with me because they had to be certified by the Turkish government as antiquities. He said the process would take about a month. I received the rugs in about a month but no certificates have arrived now two weeks later. I emailed the shop but no response. I've contacted my credit card company and they will reverse the charges if they can't settle it, and I will return the rugs.

I have no idea of the value of the rugs. They appear to have a sisal base with raised patterns of coarse wool. Any idea of how to have them appraised? I really like them and would like to keep them if what I paid is in line with their value. I would not have made the purchase by anything other than credit card because if it turned out to be a bad sale, I'd have backing.

From the pictures I would say the rugs are no older than 10 - 15 years, made in a technic that combines weaving (sumak - the light colored background) and knotting. The colors are all chemical in my opinion. Rugs like this would sell at about 330 - 370 USD in US - this price is based on the available pictures. But you should have the rugs appraised by a certified appraiser, you can find a list at orrainc.com. You do have the right to return good bought in Turkey - did they tell you about the right to return goods?
