Moldy odor on oriental rug

I have a delicate old oriental rug that developed a strong mildew odor when stored in a basement rolled up in plastic. I read on-line that dry powdered borax or a solution of vinegar and baking soda might work. I was wondering if either of these methods or just Lysol spray would be safe on the rug dyes? Or do you have another DIY solution?

Ya you are right that vacuum and baking powder is right thing for you but you can also try the dehumidifier and fungicide spray. It will help you to get rid from your problem.

have you tried putting your rug on the outdoor? maybe it really need some dose of sunlight in it to take away the odor. Notice the clothes that are not properly dried in the sun? maybe that's just it. :)

I have had good results from white vinegar and drying the rug outdoors in the sunshine.

I don't think I would mix baking soda and vinegar. One is acid, the other alkaline. I think you will get a bubbling reaction and they will neutralize each other. Singly, either could be useful. Baking soda does absorb odors, as in the refrigerator. Vinegar is sometimes added to rug shampoo to reduce color bleeds.
