Hi all,

I was wondering if anyone might be able to help me. My grandparents had these rugs which turned out to be pieces cut from a larger rug. They're handwoven wool, quite rough to the touch on the back. The pile on the front is almost gone but what's left feels much softer. They've basically worn down to nothing and are quite faded so I don't think they have any monetary value--but I love them. I had them cleaned and the color is much brighter. The company that cleaned them suggested they might be Mahal or Meshed but in researching those I never saw any similar patterns.

I'm attaching a photo of the back of one of them. The color is much brighter on the back and that's the side I'm going to leave up. I'd love to know anything about where and/or when they might be from. Any ideas, or any suggestions where I might search for more information?

It is hard to tell from the photo because it is so far away, but my guess is that this isn't pieces put together but rather a forme saddle bag opened up to lie flat.

Thank you! But I didn't explain myself well--the rug in that first photo is one of three rugs, all which have the same patterns so we think they were cut from a larger rug. The first photo rug definitely has two different weaving patterns, it hasn't been pieced together. I'm attaching a few more photos here, close-ups of the back and (what's left of) the front. Could they really be Persian? To be honest I had always assumed they were American-made. It wasn't until the cleaner said something that I thought I should try to do a some research.

Beautiful rug. Dont let the experts tell you those arent worth anything. It looks pretty special. I had a rug that everyone said was something different when it's origin should have been obvious to a dealer. Sotheby's finally set the record straight for me and with research I found their assessment spot on. EVERYONE else was off and appraisals were all over the map. Not sure how much those guys will keep you in the dark on purpose. Keep the rugs :)

It would take better photographs to say. This looks like a very beautiful older patchwork (appears to have machined binding? photos are unclear).

Value would be 'decorative value' which can be high for store owners providing this type of look consistently in the retail market. Value for what the piece is for short sale is a challenge, unless the patchwork can be proven as some very old undiscovered fragment which the chances are very remote. As it stands, decorative value only.
