Hi I have a few of my grandfathers old Persian rugs and I would like to learn about them. this first blue rug my mom thinks he used to call the kirman and he probably bought it around 1950. Is it in fact a kirman, and is it from the 50's or before? Is there anything you could tell me about it and how much would a similar one cost?
thanks,
a new rug fanatic

Eric,

You'll obviously have to attach pictures but from the timescale and colour there's a good chance it was a Kirman. Will wait to see photos.

1940's to 50's kerman. It looks like its had a chemical wash to soften the colors. are there any low areas of wear

floating border kermans are a tough sell. if it were cleaned perhaps $2000 would not be an unfair private party asking price to get what you can from it. At an online auction it may get $800. The look of this rug with exception to the border are what people are looking for on the decorative market.

Thanks allot for your help, this is a great site. Thanks to everybody who helped put it together and all the experts who contribute.
I would like to get it professionally cleaned and packaged for shipping and storage. Any recommendations?
to correctly describe this rug could I say it is a 60 to 70 year old blue floating border Kerman with a KPSI of 13x13 or 169, hand knotted with wool on cotton?

you are wise to have it cleaned before shipping and storage. Wrapping storage and cleaning should be approximately $300 - 400 USD at most. make sure you take photos of the rug after cleaning & before storage just so you have them. The wash tag on the carpet shows information as to who it was sold through. You will want photos of this before cleaning - I know someone who has documentation of what some of the abbreviations stand for, so you can probably find out who imported the carpet.

Persian Kerman semi antique rug - most people won't know what the floating border means. 60-70 years is just about right so that makes it a semi-antique. Accurate age id is important as post 1960 these rugs became heavily commercialized. Knot density is not particularly important, but it is good to know.

could you please ask what the abbreviation on the wash tag stands for?
it looks like HK? 207
that is HK followed by an up arrow, 207
that would really help complete the story behind the rug.
thanks again

You could ask around - if you contact email: info(a t)rugrag.com the owners of the website offer paid online consultation /appraisals and can share the info on the tag. Tag information is somewhat irrelevant unless you want to know more about who the carpet went through.
