I'm thinking about buying a semi-antique sarouk from Iran. It is in excellent condition. I think it is from the 1920's or 1930's. Almost looks new. It is thick and very soft to walk on. Rug bends easily / not stiff. The size is 11.8 x 8..6 feet (360 cm x 263 cm). I can count at least 8 different colors. I'm told it is all vegetable dyes. Knots I can count 13 going one way and I think 10 to 12 the other way.

Very beautiful rug, if the price is ok, there is no reason not to buy it.

I agree it is a beautiful rug that gives the room character. I've searched around the web trying to gauge prices on Sarouks from this time period and gets lots of various data points. I can't find a price range like I could with a diamond - for example. Should this rug cost a few thousand Dollars, or $10,000, $20,000, $30,000, $40,000, etc? Any idea given your expertise KAD?

The price depends on where you buy it. These rugs where made for the US market, therefor there are many available in US (but not in this quality). I am not so firm whith US retail prices since we are in Germany, but if it is as good as it looks, I think $ 15000 should be ok. It is not one the mass production Mahal Saroughs you find everywhere, it is a real beauty.

Thanks for your opinion KAD. I had wondered if these rugs would price differently in Europe vs America since like you mentioned I figured you can find old ones more easily in the US - the market they were exported to - vs Europe. I am actually living in Germany and thinking about buying this in Germany. The rug comes from a known rug dealer in the area who is retiring and the store is clearing out merchandise. How much more would this rug be in Euros? I have a few other rugs I am considering. Would you mind if I asked your opinion on those? I can send you pictures / post some.

Thanks
