Hello new friends. I have been enjoying the site for days, So much to learn!!!

I've been trying to research my rug for a couple weeks (even trying to translate arabic). I have had it for a couple years, and got it from my grandmother. The story is that she bought it in the 60's and 'it was wold then'. Who knows what that means from her perspective. She told me that when it was cleaned (1969 according to the tag) that it was appraised for around 5000. Again, this is going by Grandma's memory :) It has mediocre wear in spots, but it still looks great.

My question is, is it worth anything now? How much? And should I get it appraised properly for insurance reasons and perhaps institute a no shoes rule :).

I moved everything off of it an tried to take some photos, but it is pretty large, so I did the best I can. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Everyone on this forum seems so nice and helpful!1

if needed I can probably get a ladder and try to get the ENTIRE rug. It measure 10'6" x 13'6"

Thanks!

Tyler

Actually, it was "old" back then, not "wold", though it may have been wold as well, I didn't ask.

Beautiful design!!! (I have no idea where it is from or the value)...just wanted to comment on the "no shoes" rule, as this is what we do in my home...the only problem is when "company" comes over (my Mom esp.) thinks it's strange and will try to walk on my rugs with her shoes on then say "oops, I walked on your rug", (some of my rugs are vintage and somewhat delicate). One problem with shoes is they can track in oils from parking lots...needless to say, when I know people are coming over, I roll up my good rug and move it out of the way (easier than starting a fight and protects my investment).

Welcome to the forum.
I absolutely agree with fredgrower (not only about the shoes =d>). Lets look at your rug. It is a real nice antique iranian Mahal rug, also known as Ziegler Mahal. It was made in the western Part of Iran - other cities in this area that belong to the same rugtype are Sarouk, Farahan, Malayer, Arak and Sultanabad. Your rug is more familiar with the knotting technic of Malayer rugs, meaning they have usually one weft, often dyed in blue.
I would not appraise your rug online since it is very important to see the real condition. Some well kept Mahal reach a few thousand $ in auctions, just search for the name of the rug on wht website of the typical international auction houses to get a brief idea.

Welcome to rugrag forum. I absolutely agree with KAD and Fredgrover. You have a nice Persian Ziegler. You have to find someone local to appraise your rug. Good luck and enjoy your gorgeous rug.

As KAD says, this is an old Persian rug from the Western part of Iran close to the city of Malayer with one single weft and most probably of a blue color. I would only add that this is a "Meshkabad" and not a "Ziegler" rug and if it is in a good condition, it is worth more than a couple thousand dollars. This type of rug, along with old Persian Heris and Bakhtiari, used to be a lot more popular in the U.S. market up until a decade ago. This is a good piece to keep, and I suggest you have it appraised as well.
