We believe this to be a Bakhtyari. It is 4'8" x 7'2" and was bought in Melbourne, Australia in 1974 for about $350. It is in good shape but seems fairly coarse. What can anyone tell us about it? Thanks. RHA

Yes, this is a Persian Bakhtiari (or Bakhtiyari)rug, of a medium grade made by the tribes of "Shalamzar", perhaps around 60 years old with a cotton foundation and a wool pile. The majority of Bakhtiar rugs have pretty much the same number of knots per square inch, and as mentioned above, yours is a medium quality, but a decorative piece. They handle traffic very well, just try to keep the dust out by regular vacuum cleaning at least once a week, and you will have a good-looking rug to enjoy for many years.
