My wife has had this rug many years and we no longer know its origins. Any help appreciated.

This is a Persian Hamadan with cotton foundation and wool pile, and should be about 60 years old. In this type of Persian rugs warps sit parallel to each other without forming an angle like Kashan or Kerman rugs, and one single weft is inserted over each row of knots. They handle traffic well, but I recommend you use your rug in a place where it would not be exposed to too much traffic as the pictures show a very short pile. Also have the fringe on both sides repaired, a chain stitching will prevent the pile from unraveling. Your rug does not have a high market value, but it has very beautiful colors and a wonderful pattern. I like it very much.

The number of knots per square inch (KPSI) would be an important factor for finer rugs such as Nain, Isfahan, and Quom. Tribal rugs have their own character in colors and patterns and not much influenced by a tight weave. However, if you count the knots in one inch to the direction of the width of the rug, and then multiply it by itself, you will get an estimate of the KPSI. As mentioned before, the warps sit next to each other in a parallel position, so getting an exact knot count would be a bit tricky for you. At any rate, I would not be at all concerned with these numbers for a rug like yours. Enjoy it as it is, whatever the KPSI.
