Hello!

My wife and I were given a rug from my wife's family. Her grandfather was an officer in the US Navy and acquired this rug during a tour of duty to the Mediterranean. Pretty sure it came back to the US in an aircraft carrier.

It was used in a formal dining room for some time so it didn't get very much traffic.

This rug is huge -- approx. 12' x 16'. It also has a tag on the back. The month is somewhat illegible but the year is clearly 1971. The origin tag is "Rabat".

This looks like a Turkish rug to me. It has cotton foundation, wool pile, and synthetic dyes, and is of a commercial grade, not a very good quality. It can handle traffic for many more years. Even though it is large, I don't think it is worth more than $250-350 because of the quality.

I really would not pay too much attention to the tag. It could have been added by the retailer indicating some info. for their office use.

Thanks KAD. I was wondering because I've trolled the internet for months trying to find a rug that looked like this one, and I couldn't. If they are largely unknown in the U.S., that might explain why to some extent.

I really appreciate your explanation regarding the tag as well, as I had no reason to believe that it was not legit and/or did not mean what it seemed to mean. My grandfather brought back all sorts of goodies from his travels using free shipping courtesy of the U.S. Navy. Our family has some really large items that were transported like this and were certainly unusual in their day, though not so much in the modern era.

As you say the rug is thick wool pile and does have a tendency to get dusty. I will look into moth protection as well. Again, I appreciate your assistance.
