I recently acquired the following rug and was told it was Chinese but an appraiser said it was Persian and silk. If it's Persian, I'd like to know a little bit more about where it was made.

Hi - welcome to the forum. The rug is chinese artifical silk. If the appraiser would have known his job, he should have seen this.

And I'm very interested . . . how can so much be determined by a photograph (obviously I'm new at this), the design alone??

This is a Chinese rug with artificial silk as KAD indicates. The photo you have from the backside with the quarter tells the whole story. For an 8 X 10, I wopuld say $3500 would be a fair price for a private user, but I am interested to know what KAD thinks about the value.

These rugs sell here about at 40$ - 50$ per square foot. So rugfirms estimate is exactly what I would say too.
