Hi all,

First post here. Please go easy! d'oh!

This forum has been a great help in my efforts to get informed about rugs, because we in the market to replace the one shown here.

My wife bought two rugs in Hong Kong 20 years ago. The attached photos will show what one of them looks like today. We're looking at replacing it because it's been in a high-traffic area for most of that length of time and starting to show some real wear. There is also a lot of sun-bleaching in one corner.

It's 2 x 3 metres, or about 6'6" x 10'9" including the fringes. Aside from that, we have no info on how much she paid, its origin, nothing. I'm very curious what type it is, where it's from, and, if possible, if it's worth anything - beyond its sentimental value - should we decide to sell it.

Thanks very much from Hamburg, Germany.

Ian

Hi Ian, welcomme to the forum. Your rug is a typical Afghan rug. Style and design are still made there today. It is wool pile on wool warp and weft. As you have seen yourself, it has a lot of wear and bleaching. This rug is not antique, so the condition will effect the price very much. I think if you sell it on a online market place like ebay, it will bring something between 70 and 150 USD in an auction.

A typical Afghan rug with "Turkeman" design as KAD says, but I think if you find a private buyer interested in the rug, it would not be unreasonable to ask $250 for it.

If you are planning to buy a new rug, ask the dealer if he will take the rug as trade in, maybe you get even a bit more than $ 250. If you sell it private on ebay here in Germany, the market for Turkoman rugs in this age and condition is not as good as US market.

Thank you all very much for your quick replies, the evaluations and the suggestion of a trade in - I hadn't thought of that.

If I could ask for a look at another rug - I've just posted a Gabbeh we've just brought home for a living-room test and like very much, but are unsure it's all what he says it is.

Thanks again,

Ian
